Sell or Donate Your Yarn with Ease

Have extra yarn, fiber, or tools you no longer need? We make it easy to sell or donate your items so they can find a new home with another maker. You can choose to receive:

  • Store Credit (highest percentage payout)
  • PayPal Transfer
  • Mailed Check

Please note, we only accept sellers from the United States at this time.

Current Intake Status

Because we are a small business with limited storage, we cannot accept everything at all times. Before starting an assessment, please check this list. Items listed below are not being accepted right now, even if they are new or unused.

Currently overstocked / not accepting:

  • Hooks, needles, tools, or notions from the following brands: Boye, Susan Bates, Clover, off-brand crafting fiber, tools, or kits from Amazon
  • Yarn/Fiber from the following brands: Lion Brand, Patons, Darn Good Yarn, Brown Sheep from their Lamb’s Wool or SugarN’Cream product lines, Plymouth Yarn from their Encore product line, Red Heart

Submitting items that fall into these categories may result in your assessment being declined.

How to Get Started

Creating an account is the first step.

Once logged in, you can choose one of two options:

  • Online Assessment – You list your own items using our system
  • Manual Assessment – Our staff documents and researches everything for you

Manual assessments receive a lower payout (see payout section below).

Our Process (Please Read Carefully)

For more information about our detailed policies regarding assessments, please read our terms and conditions.

#1: Prepare Your Assessment and Submit for Review

Please create a new online assessment, list your items, and submit your assessment or request a manual assessment.

#2: Your Assessment Enters the Approval Queue

Your submitted assessment enters an approval queue and will move into either Pending or Waitlisted, depending on our current availability for intake. If set to Pending, you will receive a decision on your assessment within 1-2 weeks. Once waitlisted, assessments on average wait 2 or more months for approval. If your assessment has 100 or more unique line items, or 500 or more items total, your wait may be much longer.

Approval Is Required Before You Can Send Your Items.

Do not send items without explicit approval. You may only ship or drop off items after your assessment shows an “Approved” status and you are able to select a delivery method. If your assessment is not approved yet, it usually means we do not have space at this time.

Sending items without approval violates our Sending Without Authorization Policy and may result in refusal, donation, or disposal of your shipment.

#3: Once Approved, Choose Your Delivery Method and Pack Your Items Well

  • 99% of the time, items are sent in by mail. We strongly recommend using a discount shipping rate provider such as Pirate Ship. Buying your label at the store will cost considerably more money to ship your box. We do not provide free or discounted shipping labels for incoming shipments.
  • We can provide a local drop off at our Middlefield, CT office, but this is done by appointment only. Please indicate that in your direct sale inquiry, and we can make arrangements. We do not offer pickup services for any location. If you show up at our office without a prior appointment, we will be unable to intake your items.
  • Please provide any receipts, tags, labels, or otherwise for your items if you have it to help us identify items in your shipment. Fiber that has no label or easy way to determine brand or type will be valued by the gram as either natural or synthetic.
  • Send your items as if you already sold the item to someone. Pack them in individual bags separated by brand or type, ensure the box you send the items in is completely sealed, and make sure you include the required documentation provided in your delivery instructions!

#4: After Your Items are Received, Wait for Payout Options Notification

We offer the following percentage rates for purchasing yarn:

  • Mailed check: 20% of the batch’s total assessed value
  • PayPal transfer: 25% of the batch’s total assessed value
  • Store credit: 30% of the batch’s total assessed value

If you request a manual assessment, we reduce this percentage by 5% on all three tiers to cover the costs of our staff listing and researching item information for you. If you are submitting an online assessment and more than 50% of the items sent are not listed in the online assessment, you will be switched to manual assessment percentages.

Valuations are final and non-negotiable. We do not adjust prices after processing. We do not provide item-by-item breakdown of the valuations made on each item. Please see our terms and conditions for more details on the finality of the valuation process.

The current time estimate from your items being received to receiving a payout options email notification is currently 12 – 20 weeks. Some of this time, your items are going through our decontamination process. This estimate is based on assessments with less than 30 unique line items. The larger your assessment, the longer you will wait.

#5: Choose Your Payout

After looking over your payout options, pick the option that works best for you. You can always select a different payout method if you prefer after seeing your totals. Once we receive your preference, we will send your payout to you. Done!

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions page if you have more questions before contacting support.

What We Do and Do Not Accept

For the safety of our staff, inventory, and future customers, we are strict about item condition and cleanliness. To ensure this, when we receive yarn, it is immediately placed out of its shipping box and into vacuum-sealed airtight/watertight bags and sent over to our freezing queue area. Our freezing process takes 2 – 3 weeks to complete to ensure all potential pests have been killed prior to staff inspecting the items.

We will reject and terminate entire assessments if items are:

  1. Contaminated by pests, insects, or have visible previous pest damage such as bites or holes.
  2. Any type of water damage, mold, or dampness.
  3. Strongly scented from perfume, smoke, air fresheners, animals, or bio waste.
  4. Dirty or covered in animal hair, especially if it’s embedded and we cannot salvage it.
  5. Severely tangled or otherwise damaged.
  6. Items in a state that cannot reasonable be used by another maker.

If one item puts our inventory at risk, the entire assessment may be discarded. The seller will be informed, and no payout will be issued.

To avoid this, please only send items you would feel comfortable using yourself or gifting to a friend (based on condition, not personal preferences). If you question either scenario, its condition may be too poor for receiving a payout from our process.

We love receiving these types of items:

  1. Well taken care/stored of fiber based items of all kinds – yarn, roving, spinning fiber, and more. Even fibers without labels will be considered and typically weighed by the gram if they cannot be identified easily.
  2. Working tools with all pieces present.
  3. Project or notion bags without stains or holes.
  4. Novelties like enamel pins with their backings, gently used t-shirts with a fiber arts related theme, and similar.

Be sure to treat your items with care – pack them in plastic/paper bags neatly when sending them to us with any relevant information about them in well-sealed packaging. The less we need to do to get the items in a sellable state, the better of a payout you will receive.

For more information about our detailed policies regarding assessments, please read our terms and conditions.

Our online assessment system will allow you to create, modify, and submit assessments to Yarn Saver, as well as monitor the status of your assessment as it moves through our process! To learn more about how to use our online assessment system, please see our blog post here!
